HOLIDAY CARDS

Red Squirrel & Amanita

As the nights grow longer and the days grow shorter, the squirrel can be seen hard at work creating stores of food to last through the winter. The red squirrel is particularly fond of fungi, and can eat the poisonous Amanita mushroom with no ill effects. It has been observed hanging the mushrooms from the branches of pine trees to dry out for a later feast.

Yule Goat

The legend of the Yule Goat has taken many shapes over the centuries, but the belief originates in ancient Norse religion as an offering to the god Thor. It was believed that the last sheaf of grain was imbued with the spirit of the harvest and was saved for Yuletide celebrations. Later, the tradition of julebukking arose, in which young men would disguise themselves as goats and go door to door caroling for treats.
